Choosing a wedding guest outfit to fit the brief while staying true to your style can be daunting and result in a last-minute panic buy of an outfit you don’t feel your best in
This is where my sliding scale method comes in, stick to a formula you know and love and amp it up with hair, makeup and accessories
I’ve made mistakes in the past, feeling like I need to wear florals, frills, and colours that look ‘wedding’ appropriate, buying pieces that don’t fit with my usual style to make them work for the occasion, and never wearing said pieces again. Now, I go for polka dots, an all-black look or a simple slip.
I might opt for a simple slip dress that I’d usually wear for work meetings with a loafer and denim shirt, but when teamed with the right pieces, you’ve got an effortless wedding guest look. I love looking at my wardrobe this way, wearing pieces in multiple ways for multiple occasions. As long as my outfit hits my three touch points- effortless, at ease, with a little edge, I know I’m going to feel my best, even if occasion dressing is out of my comfort zone. Outfit formulas I feel comfortable in that I can dial up using my sliding-scale method- adding an interesting shoe and statement accessories and focusing on a hair and makeup look to elevate.
A classic for wedding season, keep it feminine and classy by channeling Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, or add a little edge and opt for a sheer style. You can mix prints, add colour or keep it simple.
I honestly think there’s nothing chicer than an all-black look done right at a wedding. For me, it’s all about the fabric and the shape. Go for silk, sheer, elements of lace, and interesting shapes with cut-outs.
A silk slip dress is a simple wedding guest formula that never fails. Minimalist, a little 90s and very cool. This is where, if I was going to do colour, I’d do it. The slinky silk fabric keeps the edge when adding colour into the mix. I’m very drawn to shades of yellow this season and love the mix with the black lace.
