I’m craving a simple nightgown-inspired dress this summer. One I can wear with loafers and knitwear for day and low heeled sandals and a leather jacket for dinner
A nightie can work from day to night, from summer through autumn, and feels understated yet elegant when styled well.
I’m not sure if it was The Row’s SS25 collection, where they styled a nighty under a grey knit, or Sienna Miller’s look at the recent Chloe show wearing an oversized leather jacket over her silk nighty that sparked this craving, but I’m on the hunt for the perfect lingerie-inspired dress. Laura Harrier, wearing a simple cream slip dress, has been on my inspiration board for years, and I’m always inspired by 90s Kate Moss.
“It feels classic yet current and just what I need to breathe some new life into my wardrobe”
I’m looking for that perfect balance of not too bridal and not too bedtime. I want something not too sheer but not too basic. Any length goes from mini to midi to maxi. Plain silk or satin materials work best—cotton works too, but I want to avoid veering into sundress territory, so added broderie anglaise or lace will keep it looking on the right side of nightgown.
For an authentic take on the look, I’m seeking out vintage-inspired nightwear brands such as Faune, If Only If, and Laneway The Label. Some of the coolest ones I’ve seen on Instagram are vintage, @christietyler wearing a Vintage Dior Slip Skirt is perfection, that lace trim! Simone Rocha’s Slip Dress is probably as close as I envision, and I love the simplicity of Ghosts’ A-Line Maxi Slip.
As it’s bordering on bedtime, it’s important to add elements to avoid looking like you’ve wandered out of the house in your actual nightgown. Jewellery will help elevate. On a recent holiday, I added my Alter Ego Power Beads to my If Only If Nightie. I’ll also be throwing on knitwear and oversized leather jackets over my simple slips. For footwear, a leather flip-flop or ballet pump on a hot day or a chunky loafer. A low-heeled sandal for night. You want to let the dress be the main focus, but adding key pieces like a structured bag, statement cuff or sunglasses will help keep it more day-wear.
