A Sense Of Occasion

Nail the Dress Code Without Losing Your Style

In partnership with NET-A-PORTER

Occasion wear used to make me feel anxious, often sending me rushing out to buy something that suited the event more than my own style

The NETAPORTER Occasion EDIT Over Dress

In recent years, I’ve redefined what event dressing means to me- making my wardrobe and personal style work for where I’m going, instead of the other way around.

Occasionwear is often the most neglected part of our wardrobes- rarely worn, yet expected to deliver maximum impact. These are the moments we want to feel our best, but the pressure to ‘dress right’ can lead to last-minute purchases that never see the light of day again.

Over time, I’ve learned to approach event dressing with intention. It’s less about following a dress code to the letter, and more about showing up as your most polished, comfortable, and true-to-you self.

The style rules I stick to when choosing pieces for a special occasion that keep earning their place in my wardrobe long after the event is over.

  1. Shop Before the RSVP Hits Your Inbox. The best pieces are never found in panic mode. I’ve learned to pick up something special when I see it- even if there’s no event on the horizon. That way, when the invite does come, I already have something I love that fits and feels like me. Zero stress. Maximum style.
  2. Stay Loyal to Your Palette. Occasions might feel like a reason to go bold, but I always return to the colours I feel my best in-  black, neutrals, and soft earthy tones. If it doesn’t suit your usual aesthetic, chances are it won’t feel right on the night.
  3. Let Texture Do the Talking. When you’re working with a muted colour palette, texture becomes the standout feature. Sheer fabrics, velvet, silk, subtle tassels, or delicate embellishments elevate a look without overwhelming it. These details create interest in a way that feels refined and modern.
  4. Invest in Accessories That Work Hard. A great outfit doesn’t need to be loud, just well-styled. Accessories are where you can have a little fun- and ideally, they’ll serve you beyond the event. Think minimalist heels you can dress up or down, a structured clutch that adds edge to a weekend look, or bold earrings that turn even a simple tee into a moment.
  5. Comfort Is the Ultimate Luxury. Nothing ruins a night faster than shoes you can’t walk in or a dress you’re constantly adjusting. I choose pieces that feel good to wear from the moment I put them on to the moment I take them off. That means straps that stay put, fabric that moves with me, and shoes that can handle a dance floor. Ease and style go hand-in-hand.
